Interview conducted for the television series THE DAYS BEFORE YESTERDAY : STRUGGLE FOR NATIONHOOD, of Mrs. H.O. McCurry, whose family lived near William Lyon Mackenzie King at Kingsmere. Her childhood memories include listening to her parents sing hymns with Mackenzie King. She describes what it was like to be Mackenzie King's neighbour and recalls many amusing incidents about him. He often invited Mrs. McCurry and a friend for dinner when they were young. After dinner he paced up and down the verandah while reading passages from his book "Industry and Humanity" and then asked them what they thought. She says that it was important to Mackenzie King to know that people liked him. She also said that he was a kind and thoughtful person to whom friendship was very important. Mrs. McCurry discusses Mackenzie King's relationship with Mrs. Joan Patteson, who acted as hostess at Kingsmere after Mackenzie King's sister married. Mrs. McCurry describes the ruins at Kingsmere before they became covered with ivy. She remembers a donkey statue and a teepee being there at one time. During a visit to the ruins with Mackenzie King, he told her to look through a particular arch at a "typical Canaletto" scene. She also states that Mackenzie King thought the works of art by the Group of Seven were dreadful. <20mn>
