Four watercolours entitled "Old Fort Garry, Winnipeg 1869, demolished 1882", "Main Street, Winnipeg, 1870". "Main Street Winnipeg, 1870, looking north", and "Old fort Garyy, Winnipeg, 1870". Works by Ernest J. Hutchins (active 1872-1911).
This is a retrospective accession. The information about it is found in RG 37 "C" Series, Volume 334, File 1920-75; in the Picture Division Accession Book 1921-1931 (1923-12-24 entry); and in the Artist File 705-687 items I-2, I-3.
Jenny (nêe) Russell Simpson (1847-1936) was an artist who was sometimes employed as a copyist by the PAC. Works by her entitled "Winnipeg, Corner of Main and Portage in 1972" (Acc. No. 1996-345, C-011246), "Main St. Fort Garry looking North, 1870" (Acc. No. 1997-126-1), and "Manitoba 1871" (Acc. No. 1997-126-2) may be copies based on works by Hutchins.
Both works bear catalogue number 24/12/23.
