On the top of the stretcher, at the back of the painting may be seen the word "Ogilvie". It can, therefore, be safely assumed that this painting, at one time, hung in the Montreal offices of the Ogilvie Flour Mills Co., Ltd. According to the information from a metal name plate, at the bottom of the frame, which is also substantiated in the Company's publication, "Ogilvie In Canada / Pioneer Millers / 1801-1951" by G.R. Stevens O.B.E.,.
Charles A. Dunning was President of the Ogilvie Flour Mills Co., Ltd., from 1940-1947, and was appointed Chairman of the Company, in 1947, (a post he held until his death, in 1958). Thus, a date of ca. 1947, for the execution of this portrait would seem reasonable, given the date of his appointment as Chairman of the Company and the fact that the artist Richard Jack died, in 1952.
It also seems likely that, following Charles A. Dunning's death, in 1958, the portrait was returned, by the Ogilvie Co., directly to his daughter, Katherine Dunning Ambrose, who had possession of it, until her death, in 1996. Subsequently, the portrait was moved, from Mrs. Ambrose's Ottawa residence, to the National Archives.
