Footage of: a crowded stadium on the opening day of the British Empire Games held in Hamilton; flags of various Empire countries flying on flagpoles in the background; contingents marching past the viewing stand; parade being led by a kilted Scottish Guardsman wearing a bearskin hat and carrying a Union Jack; the contingents from Newfoundland, Bermuda, and Australia; dignitaries on the viewing stand; the contingents from Wales, Ireland, England, Canada, and British Guiana; His Excellency the Governor General, Mr. E.W. Beattie, and Premier Ferguson on the viewing stand; contingents assembled on the field and marching off the field carrying identifying placards; a radio announcer in front of a large microphone describing the opening ceremonies; Bobby Kerr, former Olympic champion, with M.M. Robinson, who planned the British Empire Games; and an official speaking from the viewing platform.~Footage of the competitions includes: the classic marathon, won by D. McL. Wright of Scotland; Percy Williams of Canada winning the 100 yards; Lord David Burghley running the hurdles; G. Smallacombe of Canada, winner of the hop-step-and-jump; War canoes on Hamilton Bay; a crew of the Leander Boat Club, Hamilton; the start of the 440 yards race, won by A. Wilson of Canada; parts of the 880 yards race won by J. Hampson of England; shots of several races including the 220 yards won by S. E. Englehart. Huge crowds are seen in the stands and attending the swimming and diving contests. Also shown are two women in bathing suits preparing to dive, and then shots of a woman as she dives from a high platform. Scenes of the annual regatta of the Canadian Canoe Association are shown including a canoe race and crowds on the shore. G. W. Bailey of England is the winner of the steeple chase, part of which is shown; the English bowling team is also shown, as is part of their event. The film ends by showing a wreath in honour of the heroic dead: "Britannia's Sons". <13mn 39s>
