The Cold War lifted the Arctic from the remote wilderness and dropped it centre-stage in the greatest drama that never was. Forever the territory had been ignored by Canada and seen as an exotic backlot by the United States. Suddenly it seemed crucial to the security of both - but in very different ways.~The Americans saw it as a strategic interest; a listening post, a launching pad, a buffer zone. For exactly that reason, Canada began to see it as a cherished symbol of the true north, strong and free. Beginning in the 1950s and for the four decades that followed, neither country spared any expense in trying to hammer these abstract visions of the landscape into the permafrost.~The Americans send planeloads of military technology and the Canadians, in turn, sent shiploads of bureaucrats. Together they built a glass bubble of modernity and dropped in on top of the Inuit.~The film blends interviews with three generations of Inuit, a portrait of modern life in the north and a history, using archival film, tracing the political development of the Eastern Arctic from the start of the Cold War to the creation of Nunavut. Stylized in the tradition of the documentary of ideas, the feature-length film is a look at the struggles around mythologies, territories, and modes of survival at the dawn of a new millennium. <87mn 32s>
