Documentary about the role of the Royal Canadian Navy in relation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and international defence. The focus is on the threat of submarines armed with missiles, Soviet submarines carrying missiles and the problems they cause for the navy. Navies around the world are questioning what steps to take to contend with the threat posed by the development of missile-firing submarines and atomic-powered submarines capable of lengthy voyages. The fear is that such vessels several hundred miles out in the Atlantic Ocean could launch attacks on the industrial heartland of North America. A CBC film unit covers the work of a Royal Canadian Navy anti-submarine group. Also included are interviews of Royal Canadian Navy officials. There is footage of Royal Canadian Navy ships and footage obtained from Washington on various aspects of modern submarine performance and anti-submarine ships and weapons, attack carriers of the U.S. and British navies, missile cruisers with homing weapons and destroyer-escorts designed and built in Canada for the Royal Canadian Navy. Included is footage from the National Film Board archives, taken during the worst days of the Atlantic battle when many ships were sunk. The documentary also traces the evolution of the submarine through the First and Second World Wars to the present. <33mn>
