Press conference held by representatives of the International Network on Genetically Engineered Foods (INGEF) to challenge food regulations being considered by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).~Opening statements by Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Pure Food Campaign in the United States and spokesperson for INGEF, discusses the composition and purpose of the Network and introduces colleagues from the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements and the Council of Canadians. Rifkin claims that countries will not be able to label genetically engineered foods if the United States and GATT allow such foods to be exported without proper labelling.~Rifkin gives examples of human genes placed in animals, animal genes mixes with plant genes and other combinations that allow scientists to create new food, raising many health and consumer issue.~Other speakers criticize the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the official food policy arm of GATT, for trying to lower standards in order to facilitate food production and exporting of food.~Questions follow. <62mn>
