Marfa lives in a little peasant village on the Russian steppes with her Uncle Ivan and her "avaricious aunt." Uncle Ivan wants Marfa to marry their rich neighbour Peter, who is an eligible bachelor. Marfa is in the forest talking to her friend about her "one little romance". Flashback to last winter where Marfa is saved from a pair of ruffians in the forest by a young newcomer in the village named Jan. Jan and Marfa return to the village but Uncle Ivan sees that Jan is poor so he ignores him and chases Marfa back home. Meanwhile Colonel Gregoff, the new governer, has taken note of Marfa. Later that summer, Uncle Ivan tries to arrange a marriage between Peter and Marfa but she scorns him. Uncle Ivan reprimands her, mainly because he is losing out on a possible fortune, and then returns to ease things over with Peter. While Marfa is telling this story, Peter interrupts her and she shoos him away by hitting him with a bottle. Peter storms off and decides to marry his first love instead. Uncle Ivan tries to sway Peter back to Marfa but to no avail. Furious at his loss, Uncle Ivan and his wife find Marfa and start to throttle her. Marfa escapes their clutches and flees into the village. A chase ensues... <7mn 5s>
