At the Gymnasium of Westminster College at Fulton, Missouri, for the John Findly Green Lecture Foundation, Winston Spencer Churchill gives an address entitled "Sinews of Peace".~Audience sings "God Save the King".~Dr. Frank L. McLuer, President of the College introduces Governor Donnelly of Missouri.~Governor Donnelly speaks very bombastically and welcomes President Truman and Winston Churchill to his humble college.~Professor McLuer talks about the J.F. Greene Foundation and introduces Harry S. Truman.~President Truman talks about Churchill and introduces him.~Winston Churchill talks about making a lasting peace and preserving what was fought for in World War II. He urges the United States to develop an overall strategic world leadership to ensure world happiness.~He speaks favourably about the United Nations but says "it would be wrong to trust the secret of the atomic bomb to it while it is still in its infancy". (Applause).~Churchill feels that the United States will not use the power it has for wicked purposes, or to enforce tyranny on other peoples, but rather to usher in an age of plenty.~He urges a close alliance of the English-speaking peoples in a military sense to enhance the power of the United Nations in working for peace and security, otherwise "the stone age may return on the gleaming wings of science".~However he notes, a shadow has fallen across the scene - the Soviet Union.~"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent... in the Soviet sphere".~Because of Russia, Europe is not stable and must be unified. Italy and France may go Communist as may many other countries throughout the world. We must not let another war come because we are weak. The UN and the English-speaking peoples must stand firm against aggression.~He then outlines the strength of the British Empire.~Churchill concludes by saying that if the English-speaking peoples work together there will be "an overruling assurance of security, not only for us, but for all; not only for our own time, but for a century to come".~Professor McCluer confers a Doctor of Law degree on Harry S. Truman.~President Truman thanks him, talks about leadership, the UN, the atomic bomb, and his hopes for world peace.~Professor McCluer confers a degree on Winston Churchill.~Churchill says "Mr. President I am most grateful to you, to the authority of the State of Missouri, and to the College for the great kindness in conferring on me this degree." He makes a few jokes and thanks them for the degree. "I need scarcely tell you how profound is my love for this great mighty nation and empire of the United States". <1h 15mn>
