For thousands of years the Chinese have been finding bones in the vast Gobi Desert - bones of their sacred protector, the dragon. Today we recognize these bones as clues to one of the earth's great mysteries - the evolution and eventual extinction of the dinosaurs. Once masters of the planet, these creatures completely disappeared 65 million years ago.~This film follows a team of Chinese and Canadian experts sent to excavate dinosaur fossils from these layers of ancient sediment. Not since the expeditions of Roy Chapman Andrews in the 1920s have North Americans been allowed into this part of the Gobi. Andrews, seen in archival footage - facing the same swirling sands and searing heat that confronts the modern day expedition. Like Andrews, the painstaking efforts of our scientists to find the fossils and retrieve them intact are rewarded with discoveries that have excited the scientific world.~But while our paleontologists may chisel through layers of rock, their ideas are not carved in stone. With enthusiasm and in layman's terms, they present theories of migration and mass panic, and offer proof that dinosaurs had a much more complex social structure than previously imagined. They speculate on what dinosaurs might look like today had they continued to evolve.~Bringing the scientists' ideas to life are 20 animated segments produced by the world-renowned National Film Board of Canada. A lost world is vividly recreated: Tyrannosaurus rex, the largest hunter; Trooedon, the smartest dinosaur of them all; Mamenchisaurus, the dinosaur with a neck as long as a bus; and baby ankylosaurs trapped for eternity by a savage sand storm.~A film about insurmountable challenges - not only in the forbidding deserts of China, but in Alberta's badlands and Canada's high arctic. A series of surprises shed new light on an age old mystery - the world of the "dreaded dragon". <96mn>
