Fonds consists of small collection of photographs documenting the personal life and career of Hélène Gougeon. (Please note: Hélène often used Helen, the English version of her first name in publication and social life). Gougeon was born in Ottawa in 1924 to parents Irene and Edward Gougeon. She began writing for the Ottawa Journal at the age of 16, writing a column entitled "Hotels, Rails and Diplomats." This position saw her greeting incoming trains carrying political guests and attending social events organized for official visitors to Ottawa. Her column for the Ottawa Journal resulted in the publication of the cookbook, Cooking with an Accent. This was the first of many successful cookbooks written by Gougeon.

After the publication of Cooking with an Accent, Gougeon was offered a position with the Montreal Standard, where she worked on various assignments including official dinners in the capital. In 1951, with the début of Weekend Magazine, Gougeon was credited as the Women's Editor, covering stories on both fashion and food (she was also part of the Weekend crew that covered the 1951 Royal Tour). She later focused primarily on the popular Good Food column, which was later inherited by Margo Oliver. In the Good Food column, Gougeon is often photographed with guests or creating dishes at home. In 1955, Gougeon married author and playwright Joseph Schull.

Gougeon left Weekend Magazine in 1958. She opened a shop in Montreal in 1968 called "Helen Gougeon's Belle Cuisine" with partner Deirdre O'Connell. The shop sold kitchen implements aimed at broadening the culinary skills of Montrealers. After the closing of the shop a little more than a decade later, Gougeon worked in radio at Montreal stations CJAD and CFCF and continued to write for magazines such as Bon Appetit, Canadian Living and others.
