Isabel Bassett presents this documentary on the disturbing and apparently increasing phenomenon of "Teen Gangs". Bassett cites instances of teen gang violence in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver and suggests that Canadians should take heed now, before teen violence reaches the level it has in the United States, where similar social conditions prevail. The documentary, presented in five segments, examines who joins these gangs and why, and what we can do about them.~1) INTRODUCTION. Footage includes gangs in Toronto harassing passersby on the street (known as 'swarming') and shows styles of dress and behaviour of various gangs. Skinheads, whose members are often white supremacists, are shown in a confrontation with an anti-racist group. Interviews included Area 6 Rude Boys, who had one of their members murdered by another gang; and an incarcerated member of a violent preppy gang. Bassett interviews youths on why they chose to join their particular gang.~2) GANG WARFARE. Bassett joins a police squad as they patrol Vancouver looking for The Red Eagles after a member of the Los Diablos was injured in a gang fight. A former gang member talks about the rewards of belonging and the mother of a murdered gang member is interviewed.~3) FEAR ON THE STREETS. Interviews with the leader of the Black Diamond Riders, journalist Victor Malarek, shopkeepers, and the father of a boy whose son was terrorized illustrate today's gangs as younger, more violent and a reflection of the times in which there is diminishing respect for property and life.~4) TEEN GANG MOMS. Interviews include: the mother of a son who attends neo-Nazi organization meetings, a psychologist, community services director and youth worker, examine social and cultural factors contributing to the gang problem.~5. GANGING UP ON GANGS. Solutions to the problem are explored in interviews that include a school principal, representatives of a Toronto citizens' group called SAFE and police gang squads in Toronto and Vancouver. <57mn 50s>
