This series consists of writings by Victor Mackie, primarily in the form of either clippings of his newspaper articles in scrapbooks or manuscripts and rough drafts of articles. The scrapbooks are most thorough for his articles in the Regina Leader-Post, 1941-1943 and 1948; the Winnipeg Free Press, 1954-1959; The Monetary Times, 1945 and 1946; and Western Business & Industry, 1944-1947. There is also a significant amount of material on his research and writing on the CCF experiment in Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961, to which he had early access as a political reporter in Regina in the 1940s; it was an issue that gravely concerned the management of the Winnipeg Free Press as a bastion of free enterprise and Liberal politics. Mackie's versatility is shown in the manuscripts of his articles for an investigative series on national defence in Canada in 1968, a pivotal year for the military in the wake of unification of the armed forces and the new directions charted by the Trudeau government. The series also includes his 1980s articles reflecting on the relationship of the press and Parliament, written with insights from his long career on the hill on subjects like partisanship and the press and the evolution of Question Period.
