Graphic footage of a sealing expedition off the coast of Newfoundland. Seal pups or White coats are located and clubbed, dragged to a pile, skinned and flagged eventually loaded on board the sealers and sailed back to the mainland.~Man paints black stripe down back of seal pup or white coat; white coat crying, adult making noises, sees sealer and quickly moves towards young seal to cut off sealer; sealers at ship with pile of carcasses on snow, tying bloody furs which are dragged onto ship, sorting furs on ship; men empty barrels of fuel onto ice from moving ship - ESSO DIESEL FUEL IMPERIAL OIL written on side of barrels; medium shot of ship TERRA NOVA; sealers setting explosives in the ice to break loose a stuck ship, explosion shown and a second one after new set-up, men pulling on rope attached to ship attempting to rock it; sealers ready to jump off moving ship onto the ice, sealer kills a white coat with numerous blows, drags it a distance, attempts to tie it then clubs it again as it starts to wriggle about; two sealers approach white coat, one chases adult into water while the second clubs the white coat - adult seal jumps back out of water and goes for the sealer startling him, second sealer finishes off the kill with numerous blows while the adult seal is chased back into the water; unloading furs at Newfoundland dockyard; adult seal and white coat on ice; sealer kills white coat, smiles as he approaches camera, kills another closer to the camera then sticks spike of stick into its head and drags it away, sharpens knife rips open body to prepare for skinning, adult shown near blood, sealer skins second seal drags skins to pile, close-up of white coat yelping; departure of fleet, man calls names from list as sealers board ship, building BOWRING BROTHERS visible in background, ship leaves shore, buildings along shore visible THE ROYAL STORES LTD., JOB BROTHERS & CO., CHARLES A. BELL LTD., HARVEY & CO. LTD. PIER 1, F. M. O'LEARY LTD.; sealer kills pup then drags it away.~Crawley photographer Stanley Brede holds and pets a white coat; sealer eats lunch on ice between kills; adult seal on its side near blood (may have just given birth); seals being killed, one seems to be alive as it is dragged away; point of view shot from sealing vessel, white coat approaches passing ship then quickly slithers away; man looking through binoculars from a small plane; blood on the ice. <19mn 35s>

1. For complete notes on this production, see ISN 211870.~2. The clubbing of the white coats is very graphic and marks a contrast to the completed production of this film. The seals killed in the final production are partially hidden behind mounds of ice and snow.
