This accession consists of 103 boxes of records, specifically field notes, created between 1883 and 1978 by the Canadian Hydrographical Service, presently part of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.The accession includes but is not limited to records relating to the following subjects : coastline observations, ship soundings, special surveys, topography, locating angles, transit angles, triangulations, angles of traverses, traverse surveys, general observations, discharge measures, metering diaries, soundings, angles and shore lines, sextant angles, survey of dams, hill sketchings, investigation levels, sketching books, gage levels, shoals, general field notes by location, monuments, echo soundings, offshore and inshore soundings, soundings by location, stretch line soundings, tellurometer notes, calibrations.

The first boxes of this accession contain several leatherbound notepads dating back to 1883. Their condition seems somewhat fragile. The outside covering of each leatherbound notepad has deteriorated.
