The sub-series consists of maps that were created in the Canadian Geographical Information System. CLUMP has four major components: The Urban-Centred Regions component examines land use in the rural-urban fringe of urban centers with populations of over 25,000. The Rural Areas component includes traditional agricultural lands, wooded areas, idle lands, many mining and energy sites, recreational lands, as well as rural settlements. The Prime Resource Lands component focuses on those lands which make a special contribution to agriculture, forestry, wildlife preservation, recreation, mineral development or energy activities. The Wildlands component includes the vast amount of land which lines beyond the continuously settled regions of Canada. The Collection consists of the following five projects:
(Project 202-2101). The major components related to CLUMP are as follows: (040) Major urban centered regions (UCR) boundaries; (041) Minor UCR boundaries; (710) 1971 Land use maps; (720) 1976 Land use maps; (721) Urban Land Use change; (730) 1966 Land use correction maps, (740) 1966 - 1971 Land use update maps; (750) 1971-1976 Land use update maps, (760X and 760Y) 1981 Land use for major urban centres; (761) 1981 Land use for minor urban centres; (770Z) 1981 Land use change. The minor components reated to CLUMP: (9179) CLUMP Overlay Test mapping urban centres; (9181) CLUMP Province of Quebec municipal and regional boundaries; (9190) 1Km Grid for the City of London; (9343) Agricultural zones of Montreal UCR.
(Project 202-2107) 1981-1986 Land Use. Coverages include: (9358) 1981 Land cover/land activity maps; (9359) 1986 Land cover/land activity maps; (9361) 1971 Land Use [Niagara], (data does not exist); and (9388) Halifax Planning Zones (data does not exist).
(Project 203-2105) Marginal Lands Study. The Marginal Lands data were stored as two separate coverages, each contain nine 1:50 000 map sheets. Coverages include: (9256) 1958 Land Use (Marginal Lands), depicts Renfrew, Ontario and Gaspe, Quebec; (9257) 1976 Land Use (Marginal Lands), focused on historical land use change of lands only marginally classified as good for agriculture. Two study areas were selected, near Cambellton, N.B. and Pembroke, Ontario. Both the 1958 and 1976 mappings were done from aerial photography.
(Project 3190-0071) URSIA (Urban and Regional Information Systems Association). Coverages include: (925) 1964 Prime Land Use; (926) 1968 Prime Land Use; (927) 1973 Prime Land Use. The PLU coverages depict urban mines, quarries, sand and gravel pits, outdoor recreation, horticulture, fur, poultry, orchards, vineyards and cropland. Coverages are at the 1:50 000 scale.
(Project 3190-0102). Coverages include: (9026) 1970-1976 Land Use System, a feasibility study to map rural land systems using LANSAT imagery and characterize these systems using CGIS capabilities; (9027) Soil Data Base, feasibility study to evaluate satellite remote sensing data to delineate and monitor boundary between agriculture and wildife habitat areas in a prairie environment; (9086) Land Use (1970) and (9087) Land Use (1976) - both coverage are in the in Neepawa, Weilwood, Oberon and areas; (9091) Grid Cell Sampling; (9109) 2 KM Grid for CLUMP, covers Western N.B., Matane,Quebec, and southern Saskatchwan and Alberta; (9145) 2 KM Grid, covering Southern Ontario; (9102) Northern Land Use (Test), polygon data; (9103) Northern Land Use, point data; (9104) Northern Land Use, a pilot study to determine the feasibility of digitizing the NLU Map series.
The Collection also consists of numerous overlay coverages. One should refer to the finding aids to determine the focus of these thematic coverages and the associated coverage codes.
These maps were created in the Canada Land Data System (CLDS). The National Archives has the original CLDS binary computer files in EBCDIC format and migrated copies of the shoreline, agriculture, recreation and 1966 CLI land use coverages as PC ArcInfo coverages and ArcExport (E00) files.
The bulk of the data was released to the public in 1998. The maps and data were made available free of charge on the Canadian Geospatial Data Infraestruture, GeoGratis web site. The Geogratis site and related geospatial files are currently maintained by Natural Resources Canada.
