Fonds consists of prints of pack train of Mr. J. Clearihue en route to Dawson, YT, during the Yukon Gold Rush, at Glenora, B.C. and views of Glenora, B.C., all taken c 1898.

Joseph Clearihue began travelling on May 9, 1898 on the "Paksham" with a pack train of 40 mules (each mule carrying 250 pounds) and a supply of goods. His oblong tent was 80 inches long and 22 inches wide. His friend, Rev. John Pringle, conducted a Sunday service in the tent. The Victoria Times had his 27 mules and 1 horse up for sale on March 25, 1899.

Clearihue, Joseph, 1835-1907 : Joseph Clearihue was born December 12, 1835 in Québec City, QC, the son of Ann and James Clearihue of Québec City. Joseph arrived in Victoria, BC on the S.S. Foxwood on June 18, 1859. Over the course of his life he was a miner, trader and gold seeker during the Gold Rush, a merchant, hotel keeper, and a Justice of the Peace at Dease Lake, BC.

He and his brother Alexander were "J & A Clearihue, Commission Merchants" on 26 Yates Street, Victoria, BC, dealing in fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and consignments of furs and skins.

Joseph was a miner (gold seeker) on the Fraser River, Barkerville, Williams Creek, Dease Lake and other areas in the 1860s - 1870s.

He arrived at Laketon, Dease Lake, on May 17, 1874 and purchased a hotel, a restaurant building, and a bakery, partnering with James Carson on October 20, 1874.

Joseph married his first cousin, Annie Bisset on February 17, 1885 in Québec City, QC and moved back to Victoria, BC on July 29, 1886. They had three children: Etholine, Joseph B., and Albert Maitland.

On September 5, 1900 he ventured Skagway and then to Dawson City to open a trading venture there with Thomas Earle of Victoria under "Clearihue & Earle" and dealing in hay, oats and groceries.

In October of 1901 he returned to Victoria, BC and died there on January 8, 1907.

Historique de la conservation :

Four photographs were loaned to Library and Archives Canada in 1974 by Dr. Joyce Clearihue. These photographs were copied and returned to the donor. Dr. Clearihue donated the original four, along with three new photographs of similar subject matter, in 1999 and these were formally acquired in June 2004.
