Thorson's family including his wife, his children Ellen, Gail, Donald and his brothers John and Charles Thorson. There are also somes files on the estate of his father, Steven Thorson.
The correspondence between Joseph T. Thorson and his brother Charles Thorson is unique and very significant. Charles Thorson known as 'Cartoon Charlie' was an artist who brought pleasure and happiness to millions of people in Canada and other nations. He was born in Winnipeg and moved to Hollywood where he started as a cartoonist for Walt Disney, specializing in creating original characters for animated film cartoons. Charlie Thorson never attended art school, nor did he take any formal training in art. During his early years in Winnipeg, he turned out cartoons for the Winnipeg Free Press and other newspapers. He worked as a catalogue artist for Eatons, drawing equipment in minute detail for their catalogues. Walt Disney offered him a two-year contract to create character models for animated cartoons. At different times he worked for Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Warner Brothers, Merry Melody and Terrytoon studios. He is most widely known characters include 'Bugs Bunny', 'Elmer the Elephant', 'Toughie the Tiger', 'Pluto's Pups', 'Sniffler the Mouse', 'Hiawatha' and 'The Lady known as Loo'. He also was part of the team which created Walt Disney's Seven Dwarfs. After Hollywood and a stay in Miami, he worked in Chicago where he designed educational films for the U.S. Government. His major work at that time was called 'Minesweeping'. At the end of his career, he mainly wrote and illustrated books for children. Among them there is a delightfull book entitled 'Keeko' which sold 60,000 copies followed by further editions in different languages.
