War bonds sales promotion with Mary Pickford, the sweetheart of Canadians and Americans. It begins with the following intertitles: "There are two factors in this great war: One abroad and one at home. Over there -- Democracy battling Autocracy. Over here -- Will Power battling Temptation. Self denial at home will insure victory abroad. A good old Saturday afternoon in the Good old Summer time." Followed by footage of crowd at an amusement park. Large sign for Aquarium in foreground. Next are intertitles: "Canadians are extremists. We may work hard, but we play hard -- we also spend hard. What we earn in six days, we spend in two hours. Here is one of us -- Thriftless and typical -- Mayme." This is followed by footage of Mary Pickford portraying a young woman named Mayme at the amusement park. A crowd watches a man in a straw boater who says "Buy 5th Victory Loan Bonds now!". The camera cuts back and forth from the bond seller to Mayme and a friend. Intertitles says "Be a bond spendthrift!" and "What are you giving right now?". Mayme and her friend leave and go to an ice cream parlor, where Mayme sees a poster of three women pulling a plough, and containing the words "I serve France. How can I serve Canada? Buy Victory Bonds". Mayme decides to save her money, opting for a glass of water rather than ice cream. She and her friend go to a shop. The camera cuts back to the man selling bonds. An intertitle reads "Be proud of your old clothes!" Mayme decides not to buy anything, she walks home to save money and hides her money under a carpet. Intertitles read: "First battle of her war. Temptation driven back twenty-one miles. Casualty list. 1 ice cream soda 1 new dress 1 street car ride. After weeks of this offensive, our Little Canadian toed the mark on Victory Bond Day." Mayme goes to buy a war bond. A poster on the wall, partially visible, reads "In the Allied Armies. With the Stars and Stripes" and below that "Enlist Today". While waiting in line Mayme counts her money, gets upset when a man standing behind her sees the money, and tucks the money down the front of her blouse. She then forgets and thinks he has stolen her money. She calls for help, a police officer grabs the man and then Mayme's money falls out of her clothes and to the floor. She gives the money to the clerk and runs out of the building to tell the police officer that she has her money and bought a bond. The officer lets the man go and begins to go after her. She runs, disappearing around a corner. Next is the following text: "Please . . . don’t let these amusing hats and clothes mislead you. The motive of this picture was as serious then as it is now, -- and the effort needed to win this war is greater than any of us can imagine. But Canadians are known for their ability to tackle big jobs -- and to finish them! That’s why I’ve always been proud to be known as ‘One hundred per cent Canadian!" Then there is footage of Mary in a frilly dress speaking and gesturing to the camera. Next is a graphic with three shields, with the words "Your bond may be the one to give the final punch!". There is another brief shot of Mary smiling and pointing. <7mn 57s>

1. The running time is based on the measured length of the print.~2. This is a revised version reproduced by the National Film Board for use in the campaign for the Fifth Victory Loan in 1943. The opening title sequence explains: “This Picture, used in the Fifth Victory Loan of the first world war [sic] in 1918, is now re-issued for the Fifth Victory Loan 1943 by kind permission of Mary Pickford, 100% Canadian in her support of the war effort, then as now.”~3. The graphic at the beginning and end, consisting of a winged-V inside a shield at the start and three shields at the end, appear to have been added in the 1943 version.
