Newsreel footage of nearly 500 Canadian soldiers baptized in the Piedemonte area near Lake Matese, Italy, in the first ceremony of its kind held in Italy. Major E.J. Bailey, the Padre, originated the idea and was able to carry out the plan with the help of several other Padres. Several Protestant denominations represented in units of Canadian artillery and infantry units joined in the ceremony, among them the Baptists, Church of England, United Church of Canada, Presbyterians and Lutherans. Smaller denominations such as Mennonites, Pentecostal, Plymouth Brothers, Dutch Reform and the Evangelical, were cared for with the help of the Salvation Army. Instructions, services and prayers were held by the different denominations, each in its own group, followed by the baptisms. Later, all sects jioned in a special service.
