The contemporary obsession with body size and shape among North American women. Under the coercive powers of consumerism and the mass media, women have come to view their bodies as marketable objects and to judge them according to the unrealistic standards of the beauty ideal. Paradoxically, this anxious quest for "the perfect body" is going on precisely at the point where women face serious challenges of self-definition as they orientate themselves within the world of work outside the home. Using a strong and dramatic visual approach, the film explores the complex knot of causes that lies at the heart of this paradox. It consers the confusing and contradictory directives that young women are growing up with today - as embodied in the Superwoman ideal - and the way in which such role confusion is reflected in the symbolic associations of body size. Combining the direct testimony of many women who have suffered from the body obsession - dancers, mothers, career women, athletes, models, bulimics, fat women, anorexics, young girls - with the views of leading experts, the film explores the kind of hunger that cannot be satisfied by food.~Participants in the film include, among others, writer and therapist Susie Orbach, author of "Fat is a Feminist Issue" and "Hunger Strike"; eco-feminist theorist Susan Griffin, author of "Woman and Nature" and "Pornography and Silence"; Jungian psychoanalyst Marion Woodman, author of "The Owl Was a Baker's Daughter" and "Addiction to Perfection"; social historian Joan Brumberg, author of the recent study of anorexia "Fasting Girls"; Dr. Miriam Rossi of Toronto's Sick Children's Hospital; large-size fitness pioneer Suzanne Bell; psychologist Susan Wooley, eating disorders therapist from the University of Cincinnati Medical School; cultural anthropologist Margaret Mackenzie; Toronto eating disorders therapist Catrina Brown; bio-medical researcher Paul Ernsberger of Cleveland Western Reserve University; and poet Maggie Helwig. <119mn 26s>
