Newsreel story shot in Spa, Belgium of members of the Canadian Army's Canadian Forestry Corps. They fell trees and build barracks and other structures necessary for an army on the move. Their current job is to cut lumber needed for army billets and supplies for civilian evacuees. They also help rebuild shattered towns in the wake of Allied advances. This particular unit of the forestry corps is operating close to the German border and in a short time had three lumber mills in operation, with a large mill in the process of construction. The corps is composed mostly of former lumberjacks and lumber industry workers. The footage shows: long shot of Captain J.S. Prebble and Lieutenant Russel Lowton, both of Saint John, New Brunswick, looking at timber to be cut; long shot of a tree falling; shot of Private J. Pietre of Bathurst, New Brunswick, under cutting tree; Private J. Pietre and Private M. Daigle of Jacques River, New Brunswick, sawing butt of a tree; close-up of them sawing tree; falling tree; various shots of trees being cut into approximate lengths for the mill; various shots of high line in operation, used for transporting the logs out of the bush into the mill; various shots of another form of transporting the timber from bush to mill, using what is called a sulky, driven by Private E. Hanscom of Fort Fairfield, Maine; long shot of mill in operation; medium shot and close-up of L/Corporal F. Logan of Edmonton, Alberta, a sawyer feeding the mill; long shot of logs being removed from mill carrier by Corporal J. Lessard of Toronto, L/Corporal B.N. Dougherty of Montreal, Private W. Castonguay of Dennen Park, Saskatchewan and Private N.J. Kallio of Sudbury, Ontario; three shots of Canadian mill under construction; and the lumberjacks chopping wood for their own billets for the purpose of heating and cooking.
