Album entitled Cruikshank Album, containing an illustrated copy of Arthur Lindsasdasy's "The Wonderful Adventures of Captain Golightly & Mynheer Von Danke, Showing How a Hog's Head May be more than a match for a Tiger's-tail"; "Grandmama's Tales for the ursery. The House That Jack Built" with 12 woodcuts, hand-coloured; My Sketch-Book. George Cruikshank" 1833-1835, and containing humourous etchings about contemporary life; and 2 plates published by D. C. J. Johnston of Boston, containing 9 humourous images about American life. Works by George Cruikshank and otherD.C.J. Johnston. "The Wonderful Adfventures of Caain Golightly..." contains 9 folios of text and 6 med to bewatercolours, presumed to be by George Cruikshank; "My Sketch-Book..." contains 20 different plates about English nineteenth century life.
The album is located on 0330-G001-03.
George Cruikshank (1792-1878), artist, etcher and caricaturist, was the foremost political caricaturist of the Regency period in England. He was also a major book illustrator in the 1820s and 1830s being engaged on works by Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, and Harrison Ainsworth. He issued yearly almanacks under his own name from 1835 to 1853, as well as George Cruikshank's Magazine 1853-1854 He converted to temperance in the 1840s, thereafter devoting a major portion of his career to the cause. he died in England in 1878.
