This BBC program consists of the following items: a look at Norman J.O. Makin at the United Nations; defusing an unexploded bomb in St. James Park in London; the coal shortage in Britain; health insurance; the food crisis in the world; and war brides going to Canada. Report on United Nations meetings under the chairmanship of Norman J.O. Makin, Australian Ambassador to the UN. This report includes some actualities but names cannot be made out because of very poor sound quality. At the end of the item a senior member of the BBC team at the UN reports on the subject of moving the permanent headquarters of the United Nations to the United States. A 1,000-pound unexploded bomb is defused in St. James Park in London by men of the Royal Engineers. A BBC reporter is on the scene and gives a commentary on the events. He then interviews a lieutenant from the crew about the job. The Right Honourable Emanuel Shinwell, British Minister of Fuel and Power, speaks on the BBC after a conference with coal miners. He states that unless the output of coal is increased quickly, Britain will face a grave industrial crisis. He also says that Britain has very little coal to export, this is not the time to let the country down and some factories may stop for lack of fuel. Report on the new British national health insurance plan. An industrial correspondent for the BBC outlines the main features. A BBC correspondent at Liverpool's Princess dock reports on war brides going to Canada. The Mauritania is about to sail. The reporter interviews Gwen [Needham] from Sussex who is going to Saskatchewan where her husband is a farmer. Also inteviewed is Mrs. Steve [Sawyer] from London whose husband is a Montreal businessman. Williamson [?] then reports from the scene as the Mauritania sails away and a band plays Rule Britannia and Auld Lang Syne. Report on the world food crisis. The Right Honourable Sir Ben Smith, British Minister of Food, speaks to the nation over the airwaves of the BBC. He states that food production is desperately short all over the world, a combination of droughts, war damage and other conditions have affected crops, the East is desperately short of rice and as a consequence the United Kingdom will import no rice until the rice-eating countries are completely provided for, and there is no guarantee that the situation will not get worse. At the conclusion of his talk, BBC commentator J.B. McGeachy talks about the food crisis. <30mn>
