The fonds consists of 984 original cartoons by Les Callan drawn for the "Vancouver Sun" (1930-1937), "The Toronto Star", (1937-1942, 1945-1961), and the "Maple Leaf" (1942-1945) and concerning a wide variety of political, military, economic and social issues or events both within Canada and abroad. The works comment, from a Canadian perspective, on some of the most significant issues and events of the 20th century - events reflecting on or coinciding with: the immediate pre-World War II period and the political tensions both in Europe and the Far East; the early War years and the first military defeats for the Axis Powers; the post-war re-alignment of alliances culminating in the rise of Communism and the beginnings of the Cold War; the beginnings of the decline of Britain as a major World Power and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as World Super Powers. Issues specific to Canada include the 1939 Royal Visit; the Conscription Crisis of 1944; various works depicting life in the ranks of the Canadian Army during World War II; as well as numerous other pre and post war domestic issues or events such as the Pipeline Debate of 1957. There is also one cartoon by J.B. Fitzmaurice dated 1917. Canadian and foreign personages caricaturized include: Neville Chamberlain; Adolph Hitler; Benito Mussolini; Franklin Delano Rosevelt; Joseph Stalin; Nikita Krushchev; Francisco Franco; Richard Bedford Bennett; William Lyon Mackenzie King; Louis St. Laurent; John Diefenbaker; Lester B. Pearson and others. The fonds also includes a collection of 17 Christmas cards sent by the artist to a family friend which date from 1950-1983.
