This untitled film includes shots of the aftermath of the German withdrawal from French towns at the end of the first World War. A long pan of ruins shows reconnaissance units on patrol, snipers firing from runs, men sorting through the rubble, digging; more shots of soldiers walking through the ruins, followed by pack horses, more scenes of soldiers and a horse; and a young boy with a towel in the street. Lens had been a town of great industry but is now ruined, as the images reveal. The intertitle explains that Lens is paralyzed. The camera pans over the destroyed town, showing the town square, a soldier walking through the rubble and the horizon. On the sea, the Royal Navy continues to harass German submarines: motor boats are seen at high speed; battleships fire their heavy guns. The intertitle states that some sequences were captured from a German U-boat submarine. The German footage includes longshot of three ships travelling in a line; ship moving from right to left; four ships in a row; ship with guns firing; volleys of gun fire exploding in the sea near a ship; explosions in the water as a ship is visible to the side. This concludes the German footage. More footage shows a longshot of a ship firing guns, a medium shot of guns firing and a close-up of the camera beside the guns. Back on land are more towns which have been razed by the Germans before their retreat; Cambrai is shown reduced to smoke and rubble. The smoke clears and the ruined city is visible. The intertitle states that the exquisite beauty of this old French town was reduced to "this". Soldiers walk on the street, with ruins in the background. Also shown are: a longshot of soldiers in the foreground, a corner of a building with a store sign on front and clouds of smoke or dust to one side; building on fire amongst the smoke; rubble in street and a store front on fire; and a close-up of the store burning. An intertitle says that "a famous Canadian General" directs a salvage operation and the film shows more images of the ruined town. Shown is: medium shot of a line of soldiers or officers on the street and General; Draperl standing in front of them, pointing his walking stick; camera panning to show fire damage to buildings as soldiers stand in the foreground; street blocked with debris; shot of building on fire; flames from a window and smoke coming from the roof. <6mn 7s>
