The fonds consists chiefly of the personal correspondence, 1916-1919, of Alice H. Bray to her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Bray of Ottawa, documenting her service as a nurse with the British Red Cross during the First World War. The correspondence details her voyage aboard the S.S. Grampian from Quebec City to Liverpool, her travels to London and southern England, social activities and events of the day, and news from other correspondents. To facilitate the use of letters, there are modern notes identifying individuals and events. There is also miscellaneous correspondence to Alice and her autograph book, this latter recording the signatures, sketches and words of many of the patients she served. Also included is some correspondence of her brother Morrie, documenting his experiences as a gunner with the 25th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery in France. Finally there are photographs documenting her experience.

Bray, Alice H., 1890-1967 : Alice H. Bray was born 15 December 1890 in Ottawa, Ontario. She served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse with the British Red Cross Society during the First World War. From October 1916 to April 1917, Alice Bray served at the 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham, England. Following a rest of three months due to illness, she was appointed in August 1917 to the Royal Herbert Hospital at Woolwich and remained there until February 1919. After the war, she returned to Ottawa and continued to study nursing until her marriage in 1923 to George Samuel Abbott. She died on 25 November 1967 in Ottawa.

Received in 1996 from Mr. Frank Abbott of Dunrobin, Ontario.
The photographs are of Bray in England and France, among friends, family and colleagues. The letters from which each photograph was removed have been identified. It is suggested that researchers consult both together as the letters often identify the individuals in the photographs and give dates and locations.
