Press conference held by the Coalition for Affordable Telephone Service, represented by James Kincaid of the Communications and Electrical Workers of Canada; Debbie Geoffrion of the National Anti-Poverty Organization; Bill [Corns] of the Canadian Council of Retirees; and Donald Nolet of the Fédération des Associées Coopératives de l'Economie Familiale. In an opening statement and subsequent question period the following items are discussed: recommendations for a national telecommunications policy relating to the long distance market; restructuring of rates; CNCP's application with the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission; concerns of senior and low income citizens; the groups' support of the Bell Telephone system; the Bell Telephone union and its role in opposing the CNCP application; Bell Telephone's Local Measured Service plan; and fear of the loss of jobs by telecommunications workers.
