One in a series of special talks from London analyzing the European crisis. Graham Spry alternates with Gerald Barry. Spry discusses Sir Neville Chamberlain's return early today to Berlin, with a note trom the British Parliament, He was received by Hitler at 10:00. At 11:44 he left the Chancellery, having presented the text of an 800-word message from the British Cabinet in reply to Hitler's last message to Neville Chamberlain. Although the text of the note has not been released, official circles in Whitehall say the gist is: Britain is anxious for German/Polish negotiations with coercion or force. Britain is determined to stand by her commitment to Poland and will not yield an inch. She will support her independence and freedom with force of arms if necessary. The attitude of France has already been made clear - uncompromising. An emergency session of the British Parliament has been called for Tuesday, August 30, at 2:45 p.m. It is expected that Neville Chamberlain will disclose the exact texts of Hitler's note and the British Cabinet's reply. Spry reminds his audience that news from Europe should be thought of in two ways: the war of nerves and the possibility of a real war. Is what is happening a war of nerves or actual moves in a military time-table? He is not too pessimistic. As a highly placed source observed, the position is critical, highly critical, but not yet hopeless. Spry then outlines the attitudes obtaining in various world capitals, the war preparation and the likely allies of Britain and France and of Germany in a possible conflict. <15mn>
