Fonds consists of two albums and other photographs relating to the family and career of Frederick James Thorpe as chemist and assayer in the nickel and silver mines of Sudbury and Cobalt, Ontario. Six letters from Thorpe in the Cobalt area to his mother in Belleville in 1904 and 1907 concerning getting a job as an assayer and going on a silver prospecting expedition, plus a pad of forms from the Cobalt Assay Laboratory.

Thorpe, Frederick James, 1885-1907 : Frederick James Thorpe was born on 23 August 1885, probably in Toronto. Around 1895 he moved with his mother and brother to Belleville ON. Circa 1900 he became an apprentice assayer. By 1903 he was working in the laboratory of the Dominion Iron and Steel Co. in Sydney NS. By 1904 he was part of the northern Ontario silver boom working at the Victoria Mine in Cobalt ON. Thorpe eventually became chemist in charge of the "Cobalt Assay Laboratory". However by April 1907 he had decided to get in the prospecting business himself. He was one of the leaders of an expedition that went north from Cobalt to Abitibi Lake. Thorpe died of drowning on the Abitibi River on 3 June 1907.
