Interview by Mary Jane Miller of Ed Vincent, music consultant with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Vincent outlines his career beginning in 1947 with the CBC as office boy, later as a sound effects technician with radio, and finally, as a music consultant with CBC television. He describes some sound effects techniques employed in live radio and early television productions including the studio, equipment, mixing and his limited interaction with other production staff. He also recalls composers Morris Surdin and Paul Lewis and Andrew Duesbury, a well known music consultant, and the development of music libraries as well as some of the programs he worked on including CROSS CANADA HIT PARADE, JUSTICE (STAGE 48), SPACE CADET, THE GREAT DETECTIVE and THE BEACHCOMBERS. Focusing on the changes when "live-to-tape" production was introduced, Vincent describes electric synchronization of sound effects and music, time coded tape, the consultations with the producer and director, editing, the "mix down" of all the recorded tracks - all of which contributed to the evolution of the role of music consultant.
