Interview by Mary Jane Miller of Trina McQueen, programmer, financial planner, and currently, head of news and current affairs (1991) for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, on the topic of television drama. McQueen begins with her conviction that the role of the CBC is to challenge Canadians and present a true picture of Canadian society, even if it elicits controversy. She discusses particular programs such as HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, TURNING TO STONE and TAKEOVER and explains the importance of ratings, audience reserach, program scheduling and commercial sponsors. She also talks about the conflict between the affiliates and the CBC network, in particular, the policy of "reserved time" and "available time" for the affiliates and the question of Canadian content regulations. Turning to television drama, McQueen discusses the difficulties in producing Canadian television drama claiming an existing "institutional bias against drama" because drama is deemed too risky, too expensive and competes with the CBC's budget for news and current affairs programing. She continues with discussion of Telefilm's support of independent producers and comments on the changes at the CBC, in particular, the dismantling of the permanent drama staff in the 1960s and the adoption of policy to hire independent producers and scriptwriters in later years. Other topics include: the contributions of John Kennedy and Ivan Fecan to the production of drama and the involvement of women in television production; the need for technological innovations to reduce production costs; and the role of the unions and the question of copyright protection versus access by researchers for educational purposes. To conclude, McQueen outlines her responsibilities at the CBC as head of cost management, commercial sales and business affairs department and expresses hope that television drama will be revitalized in the future.
