Interview by Mary Jane Miller of Hugh Gauntlett, a producer and director, about early television drama produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Gauntlett describes the various activities of the CBC Drama Department in the 1960s and the contributions of such producers as Ron Weyman, John Kennedy and John Hirsch, head of the drama department. He also talks about the relationship between the CBC and the National Film Board regarding film production of news film, film inserts, film documentaries and early film drama such as THE FOREST RANGERS, SEAWAY and CARIBOO COUNTRY. Other topics discussed include regional production, in particular, Edmonton's brief foray into network programing. He also outlines the factors that hampered the production of television drama including the lack of direction in television drama in the 1970s, budgetary restraints, the complexity of scheduling, excessive bureaucracy, lack of promotion, censorship and sponsorship. Gauntlett concludes with comments on the complexity of programing in the 1980s.
