Interview by Mary Jane Miller of Robert Allen, executive producer, about the early days of television drama at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Allen begins with a discussion of live television drama in the 1950s, the early dramatic television actors and actresses and script adaptations for television. He also talks about censorship at the CBC, the budgetary limitations that hampered production, Canada's reliance on European and American actors and nonCanadian original scripts and television critics and reviewers. Other CBC producers such as Philip Keatley and Daryl Duke are discussed. Allen continues with a discussion of the programs he worked on for the CBC including REDDICK (FESTIVAL), SCOPE, FOLIO, POINT OF DEPARTURE and THE EDUCATION OF PHYLLISTINE. Other topics mentioned in this interview are: "live-to-tape" productions; the resistance to broadcasting French-language dramatic works on the English network and English-language works on the French networks; and the excellence of the regional works of Gratien Gélinas.
