The records in this accession were created by the Canadian Wildlife Service and maintained by the many different Ministries to which the Canadian Wildlife Service belonged from the 1940s to the mid-1970s. The records are arranged according to a subject classification scheme that may be attributed to the central registry system of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (1960s and 1970s) and fall in the 300, 400 and 600 file blocks. Individual documents inside the files, however, have in some cases several different file classification numbers on them as the Canadian Wildlife Service moved into different Ministries. The most predominent numbering system used on individual documents is the "WLU-" system. The documents also indicate that they were filed into the central registry systems of: the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources; the Wildlife Division of the National Parks (1940s); the Department of Resources and Development (1950s); and the Lands, Parks and Forests Branch of the Department of Mines and Resources (1940s). The records relate to: land easement and leasing programs in many areas including Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Creston Valley, and Lower Kootenay; waterfowl habitat assessment studies for Boundary Bay BC, Robert Banks BC, and other locations; bird sanctuaries such as Jack Miner; interpretive centres such as Wye Marsh; National Wildlife Areas such as Ile de la Paix, Last Mountain Lake, Tantramar Marsh, Sand Pond, John Lusby Marsh, Cap Tourmente, and Germantown Marsh; and the Prairie Migratory Bird Research Centre in Saskatoon.

Before being transferred to the National Archives, the textual records and graphic material included in this accession were found physically located together in a corner of Environment Canada's record office.
