Fonds includes completed series of large format portraits photographed by Stadnick of INCO hard-rock miners underground, Thompson, Manitoba in 1977. Prints from this series are located in the National Gallery of Canada.

In addition to the INCO material, there are various negatives and transparencies capturing Stadnick's life and career between career and life between ca. 1965 and 2006. The fonds documents several industries (building construction and "The Marwest Group" , farming and the Commodity Exchange Centre, DOMINO textile co., The Winnipeg Transit (bus), Eddy O's World Market, etc.), numerous individuals (many unidentified) both casual and studio portrait sessions, some commercial work (advertisements), as well as local communities (Millross Block) and events (Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede) around Winnipeg and Sundown, Manitoba.

Also documented are the early years spent travelling and working freelance abroad in Morocco (1969), England (primarily London and Liverpool) and France (primarily Paris and Amboise) in the early 1970s. There is also a significant portion of the early collection featuring Montreal, QC streetscapes and portraits, as well as locations around the United States (New York) and a few images from a trip to the Yukon.

Additionally, there are examples of photo experimentation with fisheye lenses, 16mm film, panoramas, large format negatives, and coloured lens filters. Changes in subjects and framing conventions also showcase Stadnick moving fluidly between the photographic modes of traditional commercial portraiture to the atypical, bursts of documentary and travel photographs, and interspersed rolls of more abstract/detail photography.

Stadnick, James, 1946-2015 : James Stadnick, contemporary photographer, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Works located in: Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.

James (Jim) Peter Stadnick was born on May 16, 1946 in Lachine Quebec, but him and his family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba when Stadnick was just eight years old.

Stadnick graduated from the School of Photography, Polytechnic in London, England in 1970, and then worked freelance around Europe, visiting places such as Morocco and France.

In the late 1970s, Stadnick was employed for 2 1/2 years with INCO Mines (Thompson, MB) as a staff photographer for the company periodical. In 1980, during his spare time, he photographed portraits of the evening shift hard rock miners at various levels of the mine.

Stadnick was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 1996.

Stadnick passed away on July 16, 2015 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was laid to rest in the Ridgeland Cemetery of Sundown, Manitoba.

Received in 1984 from James Stadnick, Winnipeg, Manitoba and in 2015 on behalf of James Stadnick by those who inherited the negatives.

Note sur le classement :

The negatives have largely been arranged in numerical order as assigned / available on the negatives sleeves. However, true original order is lost as many negative rolls were heavily mixed between multiple sleeves, filed haphazardly (upside-down and/or backwards), and the corresponding "blue binder" was never recovered. Also comparing the available Morocco list with incomplete collection of the Morocco slides demonstrated that the material often did not correspond with the written list. In order to facilitate discovery and access an effort was made to identify complete rolls within the collection and any movements between sleeves was documented.
