The series consists of photographs depicting Peter Stursberg's personal and family life and his career as a journalist and broadcaster. It holds, for example, views of a race tiffin (meal after the races) in Foochow, China, 1907; panoramic views of Redpath Chautauqua, Lexington, Kentucky, 12 July 1923; a trip to China with Chester Ronning in 1971; trips to Germany, Russia, Czechoslovakia, and Austria, 1938-1939; snapshots of the Stursberg and Shaw families; and many other photographs.

A large number of photographs relating to Peter Stursberg's early life in China, as well as to his mother's family and to some of his father's activities related to his career with the Post Office, were acquired in 2002. Peter Stursberg's father, W. Arthur Stursberg, was an amateur photographer and took a number of the views of China as well as more purely snapshot style photographs of his wife, family and their residences in China. The photographs fall into two major sections: photos dealing with Mary Shaw and the Shaw family (Peter Stursberg's mother was Mary Shaw), and W. Arthur Stursberg, his parents and family and his own family; and photographs of China, which include numerous photos of various houses and places in which the Stursberg family lived, as well as views of landscapes and historic sites in China.
