Fonds consists of the personal and professional records of Patricia Thompson, as well as records relating to her friend and colleague Helen Lewis.

The textual records have been arranged in the following series: Patricia Thompson personal material and correspondence; subject files; Helen Lewis records.

The photographic material of Patricia Thompson (ca. 17 photographs) includes photographs of her as a younger woman, with industry colleagues and with members of the Canadian May West Fan Club. The photographic component which documents Helen Lewis's life is more extensive (ca. 110 photographs). Photographs include images from Helen Lewis's early years in Hollywood, personal photographs of her family and friends, and photographs from her later years when she was recognized with an award ceremony, given by colleagues at the CBC.

Thompson, Patricia Ann, 1927-1999 : Patricia Ann Thompson was born in 1927 in Portsmouth, England, and began her career as a secretary to the managing editor of the Daily Telegraph in London. She emigrated to Canada in 1956 and settled in Toronto, finding secretarial work and soon becoming active in many Canadian film societies and organizations. She joined the Toronto Film Society, serving as its director 1958-1966. She participated in the formation of the National Film Theatre, as a member of the founding committee and then as the first director, 1966-1969. She worked as an information officer for the Canadian Federation of Film Societies, 1968-1970. She co-founded the Ontario Film Institute and Theatre in 1969, with Gerald Pratley. She also worked with Pratley as co-ordinator of the Stratford International Film Festival, 1971-1975; and worked with Nat Taylor and Garth Drabinsky on the short film programme for the Cineplex Odeon Theatres, 1978-1981. She was the publicity director for the Women and Film Festival in Canada in 1973 and the executive director of the Canadian Film Awards (later the Genie Awards), 1977-1978. She was a board member of the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre, 1982-1984. Thompson occasionally appeared in films, including an experimental short film by Joyce Weiland and in some television programmes. Throughout her career, she contributed articles on film to several magazines and journals including Cinema Canada, Take One and KINEMA. She was the editor of the Canadian Film Digest Yearbook, 1977-1985, and in 1986 founded the Film Canada Yearbook, a contact guide for the film and television industry, which she edited until her death. She conducted research for the Index of Feature Films Available in Canada 1973-1981, and served as the Canadian editor for the International Motion Picture Almanac/International Television and Video Almanac, 1989-1999. Thompson received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 for outstanding service to the Canadian film industry. She died in a traffic accident on 27 June 1999 at the age of 71.

Received in 1999 from the Patricia Thompson Estate.

Historique de la conservation :

The Helen Lewis records were evidently inherited by Patricia Thompson after Lewis's death; also included in the fonds are documents relating to the Canadian Federation of Film Societies, which Thompson appears to have inherited from Helen Arthurs of the Toronto Film Society.
