This is a preliminary description, please consult the linked accessions and linked preliminary sub-series descriptions.

Series consists of ca. 0.9 m of reports from the Division of Mechanical Engineering , including tests of oil samples, analysis of lubricants, etc., dating from 1931-1956; ca. 9000 photographs of the division's laboratories to 1978; ca. 13 m of records (including ca. 1500 photographs, 70 identification pins) from the offices of former directors of the Division to 1980; ca. 16.8 m of registry files dating from 1951-1993; and ca. 30 m of administrative and operational files, photographs, and drawings maintained outside the registry system, primarily dating from 1980 to 1993.

National Research Council of Canada. Division of Mechanical Engineering : Mechanical Engineering was always part of the work of the National Research Council, with a separate division formed by 1939. The division continued its work, eventually becoming the Institute for Mechanical Engineering, until it was closed in the 1992-93 fiscal year. Its functions were taken over by other parts of the Engineering Sector and four new research organizations - the Centre for Surface Transportation Technology (CSTT), the Institute for Engineering in the Canadian Environment (IECE), the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Technology (IAMT) and the Institute for Machinery Research (IMR).
