Sub-series consists of records from the central registry system that was developed in the 1940s and used until the 1970s. It was also applied retroactively to files produced as far back as the 1920s. The file system was not always consistently applied, and it also went through several modifications.

In general, a 'main' number referring to a principal subject - for example: a scientific division, a unique function, etc. The main number was then followed by a second number and a tertiary number, which was assigned as new files were opened. An example of this system would be file number 2-1 - Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics.

The sub-series includes permanent volumes and accessions containing files from the central registry system developed by the NRC in the 1940s. Files come from a variety of blocks, including, Administration (Block 1); Mechanical Engineering (2); Associations, Clubs and Societies (3); Committees Operating Under Council Funds (4); Applied Biology (5); Buildings and Lands (6); Finance (10); Firms (11); Federal Government Departments (12); Inventions (13); Physics, Electrical Engineering and Radio (15); Research, Tests, Analyses (17); Information, Publications and Liaison (18); Scholarships and Education (19); Standardization (20); Commercial Agreements (22); Selection of Research Staff for Outsiders (23); Aeronautical Companies (24); Provincial Governments (26); American Society for Testing Materials (27); League of Nations (28); Research Plans and Specifications (29); War 1939 (32); British Purchasing Mission in Canada (33); War Technical and Scientific Development Projects (36); Co-ordinating Lubricant Research Committee (38); Division of Medical Research (40); Atomic Energy Division (41); Building Research (43); Radio and Electrical Engineering Division (45); Division of Applied Chemistry (48); National Aeronautical Establishment (49); Grants (52) and Applied Biology (56).
