Payne talks about his ancestors, in particular his grandmother, Janet [McDonald], "a tough old lady". He also talks about some of his farming neighbours, the Picards and others. Gavan and Payne discuss some of the more notorious characters of the Ottawa Valley including Giant Jack McLeod and the mystery surrounding his shooting death, George McAuley, the outlaw who changed his name and escaped detection by the police, and Father Renaud's confrontation with Joe Frost. Additional topics include: their work in the lumber camps of the Valley; the making of "home brew"; and the Irish wakes, especially the famous wake for Old Man Masterson that lasted four days.
