Brumm briefly talks about his Dutch and German ancestors who immigrated from Holland to Mackey Station in the Ottawa Valley in the 1860s eventually establishing a dairy business. He also talks about the original boundary between Ontario and Quebec along the Ottawa River. Turning to his own family, Brumm discusses his father's work as a lumberjack and the years he went into the the bush to work with his father. In particular, Brumm recalls the poor living conditions of the lumberjacks in the overcrowded, smokey bunkhouses and details of the technology of the lumber trade.
