This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accession. Sub-series consists of subject files from the 4300 block of the Social Service Programs Branch (SSPB) file classification system, covering the activities of the Disabled Persons Unit (DPU) and its predecessor, the Bureau of Rehabilitation. Topics covered include: cooperation and liaison with non-government agencies (such as the Canadian Closed Captioning Agency, the Disabled Living Foundation, the Canadian Association for Mental Retardation, and the Ontario March of Dimes); committees (such as the House of Commons Special Committee on the Disabled and Handicapped, United Nations Advisory Committee on the International Year of the Disabled Person (IYDP), and the World Congress on Rehabilitation); and education and information on topics relating to disability. Also included are a number of un-numbered folders relating to projects funded by the DPU, such as independent living centres and self-help workshops across the country.

Canada. Disabled Persons Unit : On 16 December 1976, the United Nations General Assembly declared 1981 as the International Year of the Disabled Person (IYDP). In response to this, the federal government created the Bureau of Rehabilitation in February 1979 and the Interdepartmental Committee on the International Year of the Disabled Person in April 1979 in order to coordinate its activities relating to IYDP. Designed to act as a focal point in promoting both the well-being of the disabled and the prevention of disability, as well as increasing public awareness of the needs of the disabled and promoting the development of comprehensive data on the disabled and their integration into society, the Bureau focussed its attention on several key areas; employment, income, housing, transportation and access to the community. The Bureau was dismantled in April 1984 and replaced with a smaller Disabled Persons Unit (DPU).

The DPU is the national centre for information on Health and Welfare funding for programs and resources for people with disabilities. Its major activities include: providing funding for innovative national projects relating to disabled persons (in much the same fashion as the National Welfare Grants Program in Social Service Programs Branch (SSPB); developing and distributing information on topics relating to disabilities (such as equal rights, prevention of disability, income support, employment and community and independent living); and providing consultation and referral services.
