Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Drugs Directorate. The Drugs Directorate was engaged in a spectrum of regulatory and research programs whose aims were the assurance of the safety and efficacy of drugs sold in Canada, and the promotion of their judicious use, as well as the assurance of the safety of cosmetics. The series includes records of the Bureau of Dangerous Drugs, the Bureau of Drug Quality, the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Surveillance, and the Bureau of Veterinary Drugs. Sound recordings consist of the proceedings of the Bioavailability Experts Advisory Committee for 1976, 1977, and 1979.

The Drugs Directorate was created in January 1972, when the previous Food and Drug Directorate became two separate Directorates: the Food Directorate and the Drugs Directorate. As of 1980, the Drugs Directorate included: the Bureau of (Human Prescription) Drugs, the Bureau of Veterinary Medicine, the Bureau of Biologics, the Bureau of Drug Surveillance, the Bureau of Dangerous Drugs, the Bureau of Drug Quality Assessment, as well as the Drug Research Laboratories. In 1994, the Bureau of Veterinary Drugs was transferred to the Food Directorate. As of 1996, the Drugs Directorate was composed of six bureaux: the Bureau of Drug Policy and Coordination, the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Assessment, the Bureau of Biologics and Radiopharmaceuticals, the Bureau of Drug Surveillance, the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Quality, and the Bureau of Drug Research. After the merger of the former Drugs Directorate with the former Medical Devices Directorate, the functions of the former Drugs Directorate continued under the ambit of the Therapeutic Products Programme as of 1 May 1997.
