Canada. Health and Welfare Canada. Status of Women. Office of the Senior Advisor : Following the report of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women (1967-70), the Department of National Health and Welfare decided to appoint their own internal policy advisor on the status of women, because most of the social welfare and health programs carried out by the Department had a strong impact on the lives of Canadian women. Created in 1973, the Office of the Special Advisor, Status of Women for Health and Welfare was responsible for coordinating departmental policies relating to "women's issues". In August 1976, the position of Special Advisor, Status of Women, became vacant. At that time it was decided to establish a Departmental Advisory Committee on Status of Women Concerns, to be chaired by a Senior Advisor, Status of Women The Senior Advisor, Status of Women, would henceforth report to the Office of the Special Advisor on Policy Development. The Office of the Special Advisor, Policy Development, was abolished in 1985, at which time the Senior Advisor for the Status of Women began to report directly to the Deputy Minister.
