Series consists of photographic materials in various processes and formats. There are 160 photographs, 1955-1986, predominant 1978-1981, relating almost exclusively to the public life and public persona of Ed Broadbent as leader of the New Democratic Party, particularly during the period 1978-1981: group portraits of the NDP Parliamentary Caucus, and of some individual Members of Parliament, 1979, 1980; Ed Broadbent and his wife in a meeting with Pope John Paul II; Ed Broadbent and his wife skating with their daughter on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa; Ed Broadbent at various barbeques, meetings, caucuses, etc. across Canada, ca. 1976-1986; Ed Broadbent with Tommy Douglas; Tommy Douglas campaigning in Whitby, Ont. (probably during the 1968 election).
The series also includes photos of the election campaign, 1980, including views of Ed Broadbent being "made up" for television appearances; aboard the campaign aircraft; giving speeches; meeting with candidates; being interviewed, etc. Portraits of New Democratic Party Members of Parliament, including Cyril Symes, Mark Rose, John Rodriguez, Bob Rae, Stanley Knowles, Arnold Peters, David Orlikow, Ted Miller, Andrew Hogan, Derek Blackburn, Faour Fonse. There is also a portrait of Denis McDermott, president of the Canadian Labour Congress; photographs of the 1979 NDP Parliamentary Caucus, including both group photographs and contact sheets of individual members; contact sheets of individual members of the 1980 NDP Parliamentary Caucus; photographs of Ed Broadbent as a cadet in the army, ca. 1955.

The series includes 2,555 photographs, n.d, ca. 1975-1988, relating primarily to Mr. Broadbent's political career as leader of the New Democratic Party, and depicting party activities (such as conferences, portraits of caucus and individual members of caucus), and public activities (including constituency activities, meeting with various groups or individuals in Ottawa, etc.); with a smaller number relating to Mr. Broadbent's personal and family life: photograph of Mr. Broadbent as a toddler, one small file on his family, and several files of Christmas photograph proofs; the majority of both groups of photographs were taken in Ottawa.
