The fonds comprises six portraits of social activist and educator Dr. Alan Powell. Two painted portraits were acquired directly from Dr. Alan Powell. One portrait is by Goethe scholar, poet and artist Barker Fairley (1887-1986). The second painted portrait is by British artist Justin Mortimer (1970- ) who was the 1991 winner of the BP Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, London, England. A subsequent gift was received from the Estate of Alan Powell which comprises four further works by Justin Mortimer. This accrual includes one reproduction and three pencil sketch studies.

Powell, Alan : Dr. Alan Powell was a University of Toronto professor, a promoter of the arts in Canada and a social activist. From 1969-1971, he worked with Jane Jacobs as Chairman of the Committee to "Stop Spadina" - an expressway through the heart of downtown Toronto which would have destroyed any remaining affordable artists' studio in the downtown core. With artist Vera Frenkel, Powell was instrumental in the setting up of an art gallery at Erindale College, the Mississauga extension of the University of Toronto. Powell mounted over 35 exhibitions there and founded a collection of contemporary Canadian art. Later, Powell worked as community organizer and trainer in cities across Canada.

Powell is, perhaps, best known for his founding of the Hepatitis C Society of Canada in 1994. He was a major witness and presenter before the Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada, also known as the Krever Commission (1993-1997). See accession file 2001-R9341.
