Thomas Bartley Tracy (1853-1887) worked for the North American Boundary Commission as a clerk sometime during the period 1872-75 (although it is known his name was put forward by Sir J. A. Macdonald in August 1872 for the position of clerk), and collected these photographs.

Photographs of the North American Boundary Commission, 1872-1875.. Included are group photographs of groups of surveyors, Royal Engineers, Indians, and the American and British Commissioners. Also included are views of surveyors' camps, an Indian camp, surveyed sites, wagon trains, and equipment. The photographs were taken both in the winter and summer. A key to the identification of some individuals in four group photographs was prepared by the International Boundary Commission in 1923, as was a series of copy prints duplicating the images found in the original photographs.., These have been seen by Brian Thurgood, who recommends they be removed from the foolscap paper to which they have been glued. The foolscap is dry and could crumble, taking the image with it..
