Nolan, Brian : Brian Nolan (1932-2006), Canadian soldier, reporter, producer, author and professor of journalism was born 18 January 1932. Nolan began his career in the service of the U.S. Armed Forces Stars and Stripes during the Korean War and is said to have covered most of the war behind a typewriter, working for the army newspaper. In 1961 Nolan joined CTV Ottawa as a producer and writer, later joining CBC as director, producer and camera operator. In 1966 he moved to ABC News in New York City, eventually taking the post of senior producer for ABC in London, England. Several years later, Nolan returned to Canada where he began working in the CBC documentary unit, as well as making documentaries for newly-formed Global Television. Nolan directed parts one to four of the CBC documentary series The Days Before Yesterday (1973-1976), and wrote for the CBC documentary series The Tenth Decade (1971-1976). In the late 1970s Nolan established Brian Nolan Enterprises, a film and television production house. In addition, he took on a full-time teaching position at the Carleton University School of Journalism where he taught for more than fifteen years. Nolan was a prolific writer and author of several military books including Hero, the Buzz Beurling Story (1981), Tested Mettle : Canada's Peacekeepers at War (1988), Airborne: The Heroic Story of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in the Second World War (1995) and Tarnished Brass : Crime and Corruption in the Canadian military (1996). Nolan died 31st August 2006 at the age of 74 years. He is predeceased by his first wife Vivian Marie Allen, brother Joe Nolan and sister Avis. He is survived by his wife Hollander (Holly) Layte, children Catherine Dartois, Philip, Mike and Paul, and nine grandchildren.
