Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival Inc : The Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival is an annual festival held in the city of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. The oldest such festival in North America, the Yorkton festival was founded in 1950 by the Yorkton Film Council, a group established in 1947 to bring National Film Board (NFB) screenings to the community. In 1950 NFB field officer James Lysyshyn encouraged the Council to have an international documentary film festival, and invite participation from around the world. The result was the International Documentary Film Festival, renamed the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival in the 1981 when video productions became eligible for the competition. The event was biennial until 1979. Thereafter it became annual and exclusively Canadian in focus. The Golden Sheaf Award was introduced in 1958 and is presented to the most outstanding film entry in the festival.
